1- The Fused Glass Handbook. This is used by many teachers and has been referred to as the Fusers Bible. 2- A Kiln. Check out the "Which Kiln Is Best for Me" article at the bottom of this page. (two names for the same thing) This is applied to the kiln shelf to keep the glass from sticking. It's kind of like greasing a cookie sheet. (Please use a dust mask or respirator when working with kiln wash.) 4- Fiber Paper. This is used for relief images, embossing, and creating channels between layers. It can also be used instead of kiln wash to keep the glass from sticking. (Please use a dust mask or respirator when working with shelf paper.) 5- Glass. Any glass can melted in a kiln. Most people pick one line of glass to get started with such as: window/float glass, 90 COE or System 96. These groups are not interchangeable with each other. We suggest starting with the glass that is most available in your area. 6- Classes. Your local retailer may just be the best source of instruction. Building a relationship with them can be beneficial in many ways. You may also want a chance to study with some of the industries top instructors by attending a Hot Glass Horizons educational event. Beginners are always welcome and you will start building a network of fellow fusers. Which Kiln is Best for Me? Purchasing a kiln when there are so many varieties available can be confusing.
